Twitter Aint Going Anywhere
So… am I the only one who doesn't think Twitter will implode any day now… or implode at all, for that matter?
Elon Musk has long been all talk and knee-jerk controversial for his own twisted amusement as he simultaneously runs things, or allows things to run normally behind the scenes. He hasn't made any changes to the Twitter algorithms, as far as I can tell (Currently it seems there are more ads, but that's about it). There's been no en-masse exodus. Most paying attention are waiting to see what happens, which likely won't be “implosion”-worthy, if you ask me. As time passes it gets less likely he'll do anything markedly different besides find ways to monetize checkmark verification, ways those who find them useful can — and will — live with, no doubt.
I don't see journalists all flocking to Facebook or Mastadon to try to re-create what they already have and depend on for their livelihoods with Twitter, suddenly abandoning their litany of professional connections; it's too entrenched, too effective, and too user friendly a way for those reporting or commenting on the news to communicate.
Also, Musk clearly has (way) too much invested in Twitter to systematically make it unworkable, regardless of how nervous his undisciplined musings make some users. Oh, I’m sure he’ll jerk them around for a little while, keep them on edge. Yes, it may have been an exceedingly dumb thing for him to spend so much money on. He probably shouldn’t have fired so many people. But will it be here next month, next year… this 44 billion dollar, universally depended on investment of his? Um, yes, it almost certainly will.
Meanwhile, Facebook has lost millions of users and their stock has tanked. Last time I checked it’s still there, even though it’s not nearly as useful nor immediate a platform for media pros and culture watchers. Yet it’s Twitter that’s about to go down the tubes, because a wildly successful eccentric billionaire who happens to have a thinking-out-loud problem decided he wanted it.
Ok…
